Tourism In Antarctica
The first trip to Antarctica was made around 1958. Argentina was a company that was organized and carried out on board the ship I Eclairer.
Chile was quick to react and soon began to organize trips to Antarctica as well.
However, the concept of polar expedition as understood today, was born from the hand of the Swedish expedition Lars-Eric Lindblad.
Lindblad, aboard the Lindblad Explorer, began organizing cruises in 1969. I thought that if people had the opportunity to observe firsthand the beauty of the white continent, it would mean more maintenance on the planet.
During the first decade, only a few hundred tourists were able to set foot on Antarctica. It was from 1990, with the breakup of the Soviet bloc, to travel to Antarctica was made more accessible.
With the addition of Russian icebreakers, I can travel season extended from October to March, ie during the spring and summer.
Integrate the icebreaker to tourism also allowed to increase the number of sites where you can disembark. Initially only visited the Weddell Sea and the northern Antarctic Peninsula.
Currently, most cruise ships have their home port in Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego province of Argentina (Argentina). However, it is also possible to fly from Punta Arenas (Chile). In this case, it lands in the South Shetland Islands and from here continuing the trip by boat.
Tours are conducted aboard ships or aboard icebreaker vessels polar expedition.
The language, in most cases is English. However, although the less, there are boats on board whose official language is Spanish.
A Spanish agency, Tundra Viatges ensures travel to Antarctica with Spanish speaking guide on board the Plancius.
An innovation that recently joined the Antarctic cruises is the possibility of adventure activities while traveling. Like, for example, diving, kayaking, climbing, etc.
